Lifeline and CardioStart teamed up for their tenth visit to Peru to further develop a heart program. Led by Dr. Aubyn Marath, a team of thirty-three volunteers, representing five countries and nine American states, made a visit to the Honorio Delgado Regional Hospital in Southern Peru. With only three available ICU beds, two ORs and one heart-lung machine, the team performed, fifteen pediatric congenital valve heart procedures. In addition, fifty consults were performed, a new local thoracic surgeon joined the team, daily education of the Peruvian ICU nursing staff was conducted, a database was collected for research and outreach programs to an orphanage and women’s shelter.
