Dr. John Meyers and Dr. Brian Clark of Hershey Penn State Children’s Hospital led two separate missions to Ecuador in November. These missions consisted of a number of firsts including two consecutive surgical teams, catheter treatment and improved diagnostics. The teams evaluated 203 children, 30 patients had open heart surgery and 8 performed catheter procedures. With improved diagnostics the doctors could receive instant feedback prior to the child even leaving the operating room making for a very successful trip. The doctors were also able to train additional medical staff in various procedures and care.
